Reading for Joy was launched in November 2021 in collaboration with Government primary schools in the Assangthang and Salghari GPU in South Sikkim.
The initiative was part of the broader Reading Room library programme, which emerged from a shared concern about the growing issue of illiteracy among school-going children. Thereby, the purpose of the collaboration was to encourage and support reading culture in primary school children and build the capacity of the schools in promoting reading culture.
At its core, Reading for Joy aims to nurture a culture of reading both in Nepali and English. As part of this effort, we also seek to collaborate closely with English and Nepali language teachers, supporting them in their roles as facilitators of literacy. Thus, the outreach programme has been designed to build a strong support system that promotes reading and basic literacy skills while also developing human resources and fostering meaningful engagement around reading practices. The collaboration began with only four schools and has since expanded five more schools.
